Scope
The Red-R Journal is an Open Access, peer-reviewed journal that considers articles on all aspects of the core development, extension through packages and novel application of the Red-R Framework.
Criteria for publication
Publication of articles by The Red-R Journal is dependent primarily on the technical merit of the article. For articles related to core or package development, submissions will be judged based on the stability, usability and documentation of the new functionality. For articles template and Review article the submissions will be reviewed based on novelty and comprehensibility of the writing.
Submission of manuscripts
Manuscripts must be submitted to The Red-R Journal by e-mail to . The submission must be formatted using the proper LaTeX template. Within a day of submission you will receive a acknowledgement of the submission. The manuscript will be peer-reviewed based on the criteria for publication and a decision will be made within a week of submission.
Article types
Red-R accepts articles of a variety of forms; Core Articles, Package Articles, Template Collections, Use Examples, and Review Articles. All articles should use the RedRJournal-template.tex file contained in the ArticleTemplate.zip collection.
Core Articles
Core articles concern Red-R core modules, packages, and resources. Core articles are published by the Red-R Core Development Team. Team members are listed on the contact page with dates of membership. In general core articles will encompass various concepts of the core such as saving and loading, signal management, core widget functionality, or object handling. These articles should represent the main documentation for Red-R.
Because of the inherent link between the core developers and The Red-R Journal, Core articles can not be accepted editorially and must be reviewed by an outside reviewer. The reviewer must submit a review indicating that the article is accepted (possibly with minor modifications) before the article is deemed publishable. The Red-R community is encouraged to comment on all articles, particularly Core articles, on the Red-R forum to ensure quality and good publication practices. Red-R Core developers must also indicate their affiliation with Red-R by indicating this in all articles for which they are authors.
Package Articles
Package articles concern submitted add-on packages for the Red-R Framework. Any interested party may contribute Package articles. Package articles should be limited to a single package which provides some useful functionality to Red-R. Package articles need not be restricted to single R packages and may depend on other previously published packages. Package articles should describe all widgets in the package and should provide at least one example of use of each widget. This explanation can be as one or more work flows. Clear explanation of the presented work flow is essential as reviewers will recreate the presented analysis as part of the review process.
Template Collections
Template collections are effective ways of sharing analysis methods with the community. Any number of templates can represent a collection. In general, Template collection articles should focus on similar data analysis methods, for example; a survival modeling collection, a market basket analysis collection, or a support vector machine collection. Clear explanation of the differences in analysis approaches and the advantages and utility of each template should be discussed.
Use Examples
Use examples focus on the use of Red-R to solve some important analysis problem. While templates typically focus on short collections of widgets to solve some problem on processed or example data, use examples focus on real data analysis pipelines. The pipeline should be well documented and a brief explanation of the analysis problem should be described. Keep in mind that "The Red-R Journal" has a diverse readership, so technical jargon should be avoided when describing the raw data. Similarly, Red-R reviewers will make no attempt to ensure the validity of the data or to check for any systemic flaws in data collection or processing. Reviewers will instead focus on the reproducibility of the results and the clarity of explanation. The Red-R Journal will consider articles whose data has been described elsewhere, provided that the submitted article adds to the understanding of the previously presented data.
Review Articles
Reviews should focus on collections of packages, analysis methods, or other Red-R trends. Authors should refrain from presenting new data and should instead summarize published literature.
Article Specifications
There are no page, figure, or reference limitations on submitted articles. Authors are encouraged to be concise for ease of reading. Articles should be organized to facilitate access to the presented data. Articles should include an introduction, implementation/example section, and concluding remarks or discussion. All authors must provide contact information, a brief listing of contributions made to the published article, and affiliations.
Page Charges
There are no page charges or other charges for publication. Please note that the editors, reviewers, publishers, and contributors to The Red-R Journal receive no monetary compensation for their work. Please only submit serious articles to The Red-R Journal.
Copyright
Authors retain copyright to their article. Authors must agree to make their work available under the Creative Commons Licence. Submission of any work to or use of the AtricleTemplate.zip files applies the Creative Commons Licence to that work.
Other Considerations
Some funding agencies, institutions, or other organizations require that publications be posted to national repositories. The Red-R Journal makes no attempt to catalog published articles in outside repositories. Authors retain copyright on published articles and should take steps to ensure that all requirements are met with respect to dissemination of information.
The Red-R Journal maintains high standards for publishing integrity. In the case that one or more of the authors of a manuscript are affiliated with the Journal an outside Reviewer/Editor familiar with Red-R will mediate the review process to minimize a potential conflict of interest. Members affiliated with Red-R.org must indicate so on any publication.
